UPDATE: May 1971
After the war liberated crewmen reported the pilot refused to leave his post and held the burning bomber in level flight enabling the others to safely escape. He is presumed dead after B-24 disintegrated due to severe fire damage. At a reunion in 1971 former tailgunner Jack Barksdale reported "Lt. Martin saved our lives by holding that ship level for as long as he did. Me and Freddie Presser made sure his mother never wanted for anything for the rest of her life. We owed him that."
